The World Council of Churches, the main global body uniting non-Catholic Christians, told members on Tuesday to sell off investments in Israel, in a bid to stop church money being used to assist in the 'illegal occupation' of Palestinian land.

The Council's Central Committee, meeting in Geneva, praised the United States Presbyterian Church for its decision to selectively divest in Israel, despite the fact that the denomination's ongoing deliberations on the issue have provoked strong opposition throughout the grassroots church membership.

"This action is commendable in both method and manner, uses criteria rooted in faith and calls members to do the 'things that make for peace'," the committee declared in a press release, quoting an innocent-sounding phrase from Luke chapter 19, which in fact appears in the context of Jesus' prophecy of the brutal sacking of Jerusalem by the Romans in AD 70.

Defending itself upfront from charges of anti-Semitism, the WCC highlighted previous statements recognizing Israel's "serious and legitimate security concerns."

Nevertheless, among the "illegal" activities highlighted for censure is the role of multinational corporations in the construction of "a dividing wall" the existence of which seems to suggest that Israel believes that "a viable peace for both peoples is not a possibility."

Why is the Council of this world's 'church' fighting to build that - which the Lord they say they represent - said He will destroy?

In October the European Union's Middle East envoy, Marc Otte, conceded that the controversial 700 km long security fence did in fact make for peace, despite its condemnation by the World Court earlier in the year on the grounds on international law.

"The barrier has drastically sunk the number of attacks," the Belgian diplomat told the Financial Times Deutschland, making him the first high-level EU diplomat to publicly say that the fence has fulfilled its aim.

Palestine denies the Son of God - The Holy One of Israel
