July 12, 2005 A suicide bomber has attacked a shopping centre in Israel, killing himself and two others. Around 30 people were also injured, two seriously, by the explosion in the coastal town of Netanya. The suicide attack was just 30 minutes after a car bomb in a Jewish settlement near by. Police believe the two explosions are linked and the latter has been claimed by a unit of militant group Islamic Jihad, a suspected member of which has been arrested.
It is the second suicide attack in Israel in five months and follows a ceasefire called by most sides. The previous suicide bombing - also claimed by Islamic Jihad - killed five Israelis in February outside a nightclub in Tel Aviv. The group later agreed with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to follow a period of calm until the end of the year. Netanya is around nine miles from the West Bank and has been the target of attacks before, though not so many in recent months. In May 2001, a suicide bomber killed himself and five Israelis. The last such attack was in May 2002 when a suicide bombing killed three Israelis.
